PRESENTATION TOPIC
“Medical Marijuana’s Impact on Insurance”
As the prominence of medical marijuana continues to grow across the U.S. it is critically important to understand how state and federal legislation affects payers in workers’ compensation. Providing an in-depth jurisdictional review of the statues governing medical marijuana, medical vs. recreational classification, claimed uses, and potential impact on injured employees. Further understanding the psychoactive effects of medical marijuana and how to manage such requests for injured employees.
This presentation will review the clinical components that make up the medical marijuana phenomenon and the Workers’ Compensation Board’s decision setting forth the criteria used to approve or deny requests. We will also consider how medical marijuana may affect other lines of insurance as well.

Shanea A. McKinney, Clinical Account Executive for myMatrixx, an Express Scripts Company, is a pharmacist by education and an individual with deep expertise in managed care account management, she prides herself in active listening and customer engagement to drive towards meaningful outcomes. Shanea holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry, as well as a Doctorate in Pharmacy, maintaining active pharmacy licenses. With a patient centered approach to care, Shanea believes that both injured workers’ and employers’ benefit when the right diagnosis, provider, and treatment align at the outset of care.
The principal at Nicosia Law, Mr. Nicosia has two decades of experience in workers compensation defense and is regarded as a subject matter expert in areas of workers' compensation law. He has spoken on a variety of topics before the New York State Bar Association and at workshops and conferences held by for-profit and not-for-profit employers. In 2012 he was named a Super Lawyer in the area of workers compensation for Upstate New York. He holds a BA cum laude from John Carroll University, and he received his JD at Cleveland State University’s College of Law.
